What happens when you mix music theory with engineering, or world music with modern philosophy? In fact, why not invent something like a completely new set of music notation? These are some of the goals set out by students in the freshman learning clusters at CSU East Bay. Under the instruction of their General Studies Instructor Dave Waugh, students combined knowledge and concepts from world music, philosophy, theory, history, and musicianship to create yearlong projects that have a larger context of knowledge of how different disciplines work together to create projects that are unique and reflect real life application. Joining the presentation of these projects is the CSUEB Multimedia Music Box club performing their arrangements of popular videogame and anime themes, Tetris and Fisherman's Horizon. Another feature of the event will be a New Work, by their instructor David Waugh, utilizing the built instruments, composition, and research concepts that were the inspiration to challenge these students to reach beyond the boundaries of their classroom walls to integrate multiple disciplines to create something new.
