Meridian Gallery presents Fred Frith (guitar) & Theresa Wong (voice, cello).
Improvisations conjured by Fred Frith; roaming drunken shaman expelling high-end drugstore vibrations on a mystical pocket fm radio and guitar holding court with Theresa Wong; cave dwelling amateur magician and high priestess of the vocal disorder, channeling anything, everything and sometimes nothing through spirited sonic outbreaks.
Fred Frith is a songwriter, composer, improviser, and multi-instrumentalist best known for the reinvention of the electric guitar that began with Guitar Solos in 1974. He learned his craft as both improviser and composer playing in rock bands, notably Henry Cow, and creating music in the recording studio. Much of his compositional output has been commissioned by choreographers and filmmakers, but his work has also been performed by Ensemble Modern, Hieronymus Firebrain, Arditti Quartet, Ground Zero, Robert Wyatt, Bang on a Can All Stars, Concerto Köln, and Rova Sax Quartet, among many others. He continues to perform internationally, most recently with Lotte Anker, Chris Cutler, John Zorn, Eye to Ear (a septet performing selections from his film music) and his latest band, Cosa Brava, whose first CD - Ragged Atlas - was recently released on the Intakt label. Fred is the subject of Nicolas Humbert and Werner Penzels' award-winning documentary film Step Across the Border.
Theresa Wong is an improviser and composer whose work encompasses music, theater and the visual arts. Seeking to find the opportunity for transformation through each work, her current projects include: O Sleep, an improvised opera exploring the conundrum of sleep and dream life and Disasters of War, a duo for cello, violin and two voices inspired by the etchings of Francisco Goya. As a cellist and vocalist, she has collaborated with kindred spirits such as Ellen Fullman, Dohee Lee, Carla Kihlstedt, ROVA Saxophone Quartet and Joan Jeanrenaud. Her performances have been included at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, Unlimited 21 Festival in Wels, Radio France broadcast A L'improviste and at The Stone in New York City.
