Meridian Music: Composers in Performance presents Joe Lasqo

Date: Jan 11,2012

Time: 07:30 PM - 09:00 PM

Joe Lasqo will perform a series of Indo-modernist and Neo-Gaku pieces inspired by the musics of India, East Asia, and the post-war European avant-garde at Darmstadt/IRCAM.

These pieces will generally be for or involving the piano, supplemented by other instruments which may include Indian and Middle Eastern percussion, harmonium, voice/wind, and Max/MSP (laptop).

In addition to original pieces, Joe will perform improvisations in ragas ranging from traditional Indian ragas to nontraditional "meta-ragas" of Joe's invention which describe multi-dimensional trajectories in a music space of more than pitch -- including recently-premiered meta-raga "Möbius Helix Bodhicitta".

Besides such Indo-modernist pieces, Joe will explore "Neo-Gaku transmigrations" of traditional East Asian pieces -- taking ancient repertoire for shakuhachi, gagaku orchestra, Korean daegum flute, Chinese guqin, etc., as new-ancient "standards" to be refracted through the prisms of early Stockhausen, post-war French piano music, and modernist jazz.

As always, there will be surprises which don't fit into any of these categories…!

Joe Lasqo (piano, percussion, laptop) has studied classical music in India; computer music at MIT, Columbia, Berkeley CNMAT; is a long-time performing jazz musician; and has lived, worked, and listened in several East Asian countries. His solo piano album, "Turquoise Sessions", was released on Edgetone Records in Oct 2011 and is available at Viracocha, Bird & Beckett, and other Bay Area retail and e-tail outlets. Joe is the co-founder and curator of SF ethno-modernist house-concert venue Turquoise Yantra Grotto, presenting music at the confluence of avant-garde and world music (see for example: 2 Dec 2011 - New Prana) and is planning a major video/music multimedia project based on Japanese Noh drama coming in 2012. He has appeared in a ongoing regular booking for 1¼ years at Viracocha (21st & Valencia, SF; Wed & Fri afternoons, 3-6pm). Other recent and near-term shows at SIMM Series (the acoustic sister to the Luggage Store series), Bird & Beckett, Turquoise Yantra Grotto, Rooz Cafe, Oakland (Light A Fire series).
